Mt. Makiling Traverse (MakTrav)
San Bartolome, Sto. Tomas, Batangas – UPLB, Los Banos, Laguna
May 12, 2012

peak 2 summit..hubaderos! what limatik??

There are few peaks remaining in my bucket list. Finally, i have conquered what that they call “maktrav”. Mavtrav as it is known for mountaineers is short for makiling traverse. There are different routes to scale Mt. Makiling coming from the town of Sto. Tomas but most of them are closed for rehabilitation purposes.

elevation profile ((from lagataw))

Coming from Manila, there are plenty of Batangas bound buses that passes by the town of Santo Tomas. From the Towns Public Market, tricycles offers their services to the barangay hall of San Bartolome at the price of 50 pesos. These serves as the official jump-off of mountaineers. There will no so store from here, so it is a good idea to buy your supplies beforehand. All hikers, mountaineers, visitors are required to log-in at the hall and pay the fee of 20 pesos.

The route is very much straight forward. But outmost care and vigilance is still the best key to have in your expeditions. As much as I would like to start running, the route tells me otherwise. As the route starts to get narrower and greener, the elevation gets higher. Sooner than expected, there was stampede in my heartbeat. The view of the nearby towns of Batangas, the Taal Lake, Tagaytay and Batulao appears every now and then. From thereon to the summit was a lung busting assault.

“Limatik” a small kind of leech found in dense and mossy forest like Mount Makiling are abundant in the area. There are generally harmless but these blood sucking creatures sometimes creep into our eyes that may hamper our vision. Almost all mountaineers have their own fair share of horror stories regarding their encounters with the leeches. Luckily for me, I found them friendly compared to cockroaches. I was not bitten by one but some of them were already creeping on my arms and i just easily fend them off.

As we began to found some clearing off the mossy forest, boulders of mountains began to appear. These just mean that we where already on the peak of one mountain among the number of summit along the ridge of Makiling. The rope section was technical and at the same time challenging even for experienced mountaineers as they where off some cliff and some where tricky. Breath taking view along with death defying slopes are on treat while hanging for your dear life on this section.

After almost 4 hours of traverse, we were already in peak 2. Already facing the town of Los Banos, it was time to take a break and have our lunch. From there, it was long way down. Trails become runnable but the roots, steep steps, fallen tress makes does not help the cause. I remember falling hard at least 5 times. The place was very similar to McRitchie Resevoir in Singapore where TNF 100 SG is always held. With the total time of 5 hours and 40 minutes, we reached UPLB gate.

tagay tagay tagay!

3rd PAU Tagaytay to Nasugbo (T2N)50k Ultramarathon
May 20, 2012
Peoples Park, Tagaytay to Municipal Plaza, Nasugbo

T2N..:p

Have you ever been curious what it feels to run and go beyond the distance of 42k??:D This weekend, new batch of ultrarunners will test their wits and will try to find it out by themselves as what it really takes to become average runners. Crazy at it seems, they will cover the distance of 50km by foot which starts at Tagaytay City and will end at Nasugbo, Batangas. Now on its third outing, T2N was tagged as the most friendly among PAU events because of its elevation profile. In fact, its 8 hours cut-off was generously extended to 9 hours to attract more runners.

There will be no registration on race day so make sure to drop by ARC Manila before May 18, 2012 or via bank deposit. Bank Details: Bank of Philippine Islands (BPI) Savings Account # 0296-0673-22 in the name of Jovenal Narcise. Keep the deposit slip and bring it to the Starting Area on Race Day.

Boypra’s Cramming Tips:

**Loaded. 2-3 days before the race, make sure you have eaten enough carbohydrates, well hydrated, and have slept well.

**Strategy. Study the elevation profile. Know where to attack. (pic located below)

**Keep warm. Make sure to bring clothes that will keep you warm enough before the the gun start. Tagaytays chilly winds can easily creep into your skins.

**Walk. Its part of the strategy. This is not a marathon anymore.

**Uphells. Try to slowdown or walk those part. Don’t worry, you make-up with your lost time on the downhells. Theres a lot of it!

**No garmin?? No problem..Make use of the KM (yellow)posts. km102 marks the finish line. Subtract the km markers from 102 to give the best estimate on the remaining KM to the finish line.

KM 56..3km to Tagatay City (TC 3). 102-56..u still got 46 km to go!

km 101..102-101 = 1km to go!!:D 1km to Nasugbo (N1)

**Nutrition. Eat whatever you have have been eating during your LSD. Or at least try to grab something to put in your stomach. If you are targeting 7 hours and above, it means that you will arrive past 12 noon. Its past lunch time already, an empty stomach while running is not a good idea.

**Sun. Running 10am-1pm will be too hot. Make sure to arm yourselves with warmers, glasses, sunblocks. A wet sponge/towel to cool your head will do the trick.

**Ice. Not all sari-sari store sells ice. Make sure to tell your support to have enough of it specially on the last part of the course.

**BR rules. Care to know about them. No headphones allowed. Single-file. Run against the traffic.

**Be clean. Honesty is the best policy. Make sure u deserve that that BR hug.

**Pray hard.

Congrats in advance ultramans..and see you at the starting line!:))

Tara Tarak!;p

A Labor Day getaway
Tarak Ridge
Mariveles, Bataan
May 1, 2012

boy peacock and boy pra

While my mind was still in the mountains of Baguio City running the TNF 100, I found myself in Brgy. Alas-asin, Mariveles, Bataan. Familiar as it sound to be, Mariveles Bataan is the humble home and the starting line of the prestigious ultra-running event Bataan Death March. Tarak was one of my favorite mountain to scale it my bucket list. Its traveling distance from Manila made it hard for me to finally make it a reality. You may not notice it but these ridges are the towering mountains visible to our eyes that guards Manila bay.

Race Preview: King of the Mountain – Trail Run Philippines
Four Lakes 100k/Old Spanish Trail 60k
Kayapa Nueva, Viscaya
May 26-27, 2012

It has been a week since the TNF 100 Philippines Baguio. For some runners, it was a miracle for them that they have made it alive within the 30 hours cutoff. Lucky for them. Most of the runners including me where not so fortunate to make it within the prescribed time, others struggled in the unforgiving terrain while many where left with no choice but to give up. The TNF fever shattered many dreams specially for those who trained hard for this event only to hand them their firt ever DNF (did not finish). Well as the saying goes that the world will continue to go on and so are we.:) A good way to channel your frustrations is to focus on the next upcoming 100k trail run. Happening about a month from now, Frontrunner Magazine proudly presents the first ever King of the Mountain 4 lakes 100k and a shorter old spanish trail 60k.

A sequel of the Run to the Clouds 2: Mt. Ugu Trail Marathon, this event promises to be a tougher, longer, and happier. If you missed the 42k event well this is your chance to get that rebound. If your mind is still on the never ending uphills of TNF 100 well this event offers its own fair share of that. If your a trail runner and looking for another adventure, this is the best deal that you can get. I bet there are no other upcoming trail running events that will mix a very challenging terrain, a classic scenic view of the cordelliera mountains and a well organized running event. This is a one of a kind that every runner should not miss.

See you at the starting line!

PMA eco-trail..Baguio's best kept trail

It may sound like a joke but unknown to everybody that it was my long time dream to enter the most prestigious military academy of our country and serve the motherland. As I child, i watch every war movies that I could, own a toy soldier, and look up to people who served the armed forces. When I turned 16, the youngest possible age you could apply as a cadet I immediately took the entrance exam but was not fortunate to pass it. My hopes did not crumble that time and I was not ready to give up my dream. The story repeated itself till i turned 20. Finally at age 21, I nailed it. It was my last chance, only to fail my physical and psychological exams. I may have not pursued my dream but nonetheless I showed a good fight.
